Optimization of mechanical engineering product designs
If required, optimization can be carried out during the simulation process.
In the course of a product simulation, components within an assembly may be found to have excessive or insufficient material. The design of these components can be optimised whilst under simulated loading to bring them in line with the design factor of safety.
This example is of a rack and pinion gearbox in cast iron. The original design (above left) was found, under simulation, to have excess material in several areas and insufficient in others. Following optimization (below left), unneccesary material has been removed from the large diameter pinion housing and the smaller rack housing and the fillet radius between the two has been increased. The gearbox still achieved its performance criteria but with 36% less material. The simulation was carried out in Solidworks.
